MEDAL RESULT | Women's Fencing
Olympics fencing returned Monday for women’s individual sabres, where Team USA has a chance to get back into medal contention. Unfortunately, the Russian team proved to be too much for the other nations, and the gold medal bout featured a pair of Russians. Russia held three out of the eight spots in the quarterfinals. Team USA’s Mariel Zagunis was defeated in the Round of 16 by Yekaterina Dyachenko of Russia, 15-12, who ended up making it to the quarterfinals.
Olympics fencing has been nothing if not eventful in the first three days of competition. Saturday’s Women’s Individual Epee saw the defeat of 2012 gold medalist Rosella Fiamingo of Italy, who fell to Hungary’s Emese Szasz. China’s Yiwen Sun defeated Lauren Rembi of France for the bronze medal. All three Team USA athletes fell in the Round of 32, including sisters Courtney and Kelly Hurley. Courtney Hurley missed the Olympics opening ceremony to be able to rest up for the morning’s events, only to be knocked out early.
Olympics fencing continues on Wednesday with the men’s individual epee.
