USA Basketball continued to look dominant in Olympics women’s basketball from Rio, winning by 40 points against Spain

Team USA came into the 2016 Rio Olympics women’s basketball competition as the clear favorites, but looked like something more in their first game of the event on Sunday as they bullied Senegal in a massive victory. With a quick turnaround in the action, USA Basketball was up again on Monday against a Spain team looking to compete for Bronze and at least give the Americans a scare.

Through the first five minutes of play, it appeared as if the Spanish team might indeed be able to give USA Basketball a bit of a test early on in the competition. Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner kept the United States neck-and-neck with the Spanish squad, though, before allowing the USA’s biggest strength to come into the fold.

What Team USA has that no other team can match is exceptional depth. So when Elena Delle Donne and Sylvia Fowles come off the bench for USA Basketball, it’s almost unfair to the competition. That was the case against Spain on Monday as the move to the reserves allowed the United States to go up by 15 after the first quarter.

Things only got worse from there as Team USA remained efficient offensively and stingy defensively. Spain began to wear down while USA Basketball looked spry due to their depth advantage.

Despite the fact that the Spanish team was far more competitive than Senegal were on Sunday, as is to be expected, they were still no match for USA Basketball. While Taurasi and company shined, throughout the matchup, it was again an all-around team effort for the Americans as they secured a 40-point win in their second Olympics women’s basketball matchup.
