Group A has perhaps thrown up the most surprising results through two rounds of games of so far. With Brazil rightly expected to walk the group with ease – I mean, they have Neymar for Pete’s sake – the standings as they are now are a complete and utter shock.

Denmark currently sit atop the group on four points after a horrifically boring 0-0 draw with Iraq to open their campaign before squeezing past South Africa with a 1-0 win. Brazil and Iraq both sit on two points after two draws, both of which were goalless, and South Africa have struggled since their heroic efforts in holding Brazil to a draw after having Mothobi Mvala sent off for two reckless yellow cards with still over 30 minutes remaining.

Miraculously, Iraq and South Africa still have an outside shot of qualification, and Iraq could even win the group if results fall their way. South Africa must win to have any chance. They must then hope that Brazil fail to beat Denmark, which in their current form is certainly possible. Iraq, on the other hand, simply need to beat Brazil’s result, but could qualify with the same result if they score enough goals. It is a highly complicated situation with so many permutations and it will be fascinating to watch how the group plays out.
