Olympics women’s handball results: August 10th
2016 Rio Olympics women’s handball results from Wednesday, August 10 on Day 5 of the Games
The 2016 Rio Olympics women’s handball competition has all of the drama that you could ever ask for from the Games. Coming into Day 5 at the games, there was nothing but drama in Group A with legitimately five teams looking like they could not only compete for a spot to advance, but looking like they might be able to win the group. In Group B, there might not be that same drama, but anything can change in one match in Olympics women’s handball with all 12 squads in action.
The first match from Rio 2016 may have been the most shocking of Day 5 as Brazil, who had been looking like world-beaters to this point, took on Spain. Despite being favored, the host nation faltered and ultimately lost, 24-29. That match was followed by Romania and Montenegro facing off as both looked for their first win. In the end, it was Romania getting that elusive victory on Wednesday.
Russia and Sweden took the floor next and this was arguably the match of the day. Both of these teams are highly talented and came to play on Day 5. However, it was Russia ultimately having a slight two-goal advantage at the final whistle to get the win. Norway then followed that effort up as the defending gold medalists made light work of Angola.
Finally the last two matches of the day came into the spotlight, beginning with Netherlands and Korea. It doesn’t get any closer than this matchup as the two teams finished tied at 32, each getting a point on Day 5. Wednesday then ended in handball with France just absolutely shellacking Argentina, only allowing 11 goals and winning by 16.
