Kristin Armstrong from Team USA captured the gold medal in the Olympics women’s road cycling time trial on Day 5 from Rio 2016

Perhaps one of the most exciting days in of the 2016 Rio Olympics went down on the morning of Wednesday, August 10 on Day 5 of the games as the Olympics women’s road cycling time trial event was held. Rather than watching for hours as cyclists trek across 250km of terrain, this is all about speed and how you handle the different stages of a mini course. And the results were predictably exciting.

Coming into the Olympics women’s road cycling event, Team USA’s Kristin Armstrong had just turned 42 years old. Despite being a two-time gold medalist for the event, it was expected that her age would ultimately catch up to her. Apparently there wasn’t anything that was going to catch up to Armstrong in Rio, though, including her fellow competitors.

Armstrong put up a blistering time in the Olympics women’s road cycling time trials as she set a mark of 44:26.42. Granted, she didn’t win by a wide margin, but that time was enough for the 43-year-old to capture her third gold medal of her career in the event and give the United States their 10th gold medal from Rio 2016.

Not far behind her were Russia’s Olga Zabelinskaya and Netherlands’ Anna Van Der Breggen who won the silver and bronze medals, respectively. At least for one last time at the Olympics, though, Armstrong reigns supreme in the time trial of Olympics women’s road cycling.
