Day 5 of the 2016 Rio Olympics included another busy slate in beach volleyball

Wednesday’s schedule featured another six matches in both the men’s and women’s beach volleyball tournaments, and a few teams were able to lock up spots in the knockout stages.

Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross finished the preliminary stage undefeated with a win against Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Verge-Depre of Switzerland, although it was the American duo’s most difficult match of the tournament so far. After the United States cruised in the first set, the Swiss responded with a 24-22 win in set two before Walsh Jennings and Ross pulled away 15-12 in the third.

Team USA’s Casey Patterson and Jake Gibb had an opportunity to take control of Pool F on Wednesday, as each squad entered the day with a mark of 1-1. The American duo traded sets with Spain’s Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira, before a controversial call in the third helped the seventh-seeded Spanish go on a run and close out the match 15-7, earning them a spot in the final 16.

In the other match in Pool F, Cherif Younousse and Jefferson Santos Pereira of Qatar locked up a spot in the quarterfinals with a second straight upset. After dropping the first set to Austria’s Alexander Huber and Robin Seidl, the Qatar duo stormed back with a close pair of set wins.

Top-seeded Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt of Brazil looked to bounce back against Italy following a shocking loss in their second match. Cerutti severely sprained his ankle near the start of the match, but the Brazilians were still able to advance with a straight sets victory.

Brazil could still not avoid upset on the day, as No. 10 Elsa Baquerizo and Liliana Fernández of Spain swept Barbara Seixas and Agatha Bednarczuk. Both teams will still advance to the final 16, although the Brazilians have looked shaky in the past two matches.

Australia’s Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy sealed the first set with an ace and went on to win a hard-fought 27-25, 18-21, 16-14 victory against the Netherlands, and will be heading to the knockout stages. The Australians couldn’t make it 2-2 in the women’s tournament on the day, as China’s Fan Wang and Yuan Yue easily swept a different squad.

Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen of the Netherlands advanced after a third straight convincing win over Poland. Russia’s Dmitri Barsouk and Nikita Liamin took the other spot in Pool B  with a sweep over Germany.

The day closed with Alexander Horst and Clemens Doppler putting themselves in lucky loser contention with a three-set thriller over Canada.
