2016 Rio Olympics women’s basketball has been unpredictable if nothing else up to this point. While USA Basketball has been dominant in an undefeated start, it’s been near impossible to predict any other result throughout the competition. Two teams that have really embodied that feeling up to this point have been France and the host nation of Brazil. On Thursday afternoon, it’ll be France vs Brazil in a matchup to try and gain leeway in Group A and to develop some type of consistency.
France started off the Olympics women’s basketball competition a bit scarily as they fell behind early in their first game against Turkey. The French squad, however, pulled together and got back ahead to secure a solid opening win. However, they had to scratch and claw in their second game of the competition as they took on Brazil. Once again, though, France was able to come out with a win. That wasn’t the case against Australia in their last outing, though. The talented Aussies went up big on France and never relinquished the lead.
Then you have the host nation of Brazil who have enjoyed an equally odd run, albeit one with far less success than expected. It wasn’t wholly surprising when they dropped their opening matchup against the Australian squad. But it was surprising that the Brazilian women went out in their next game against Japan and lost by just two points fewer than they did to Australia. They then put forth a spirited effort in Game 3, but in a losing effort to Belarus. Needless to say, both teams could use a win to get things going properly in Rio.
