Olympics Women’s Basketball: Japan vs Australia

If you’ve been keeping track of the Olympics women’s basketball competition from the 2016 Rio Olympics, you’ll know that Australia has been the other team to watch in the event outside of Team USA. They seem destined for at least a silver medal in the competition if not a challenger for gold. However, they’ll have a sneakily tough matchup on Thursday, August 11 on Day 6 of Rio 2016 as Group A is back in action. Japan vs Australia has sleeper potential to be one of the best Olympics women’s basketball to date in these games.

As stated, the Australian women’s team has been phenomenal throughout their stay in Rio to this point. Veteran center and team captain Marianna Tolo and guards like Laura Hodges and Stephanie Talbot have helped pave the way. Despite a brief scare in their second matchup of the Games against a vastly inferior Turkey team when the Aussies simply played down to their competition, they have looked the part of one of the best teams. Now they’ll be looking to make it a 4-0 start at Rio 2016 with this matchup against Japan.

Japan on the other hand has been more impressive and successful at the 2016 Rio Olympics women’s basketball competition than people may realize. They come into this matchup against Australia boasting a solid 2-1 record to this point, though they did suffer a confusing loss to Turkey in their last outing. However, they also have tough wins over Brazil and Belarus to their credit and getting what would be an upset victory over Australia sure sounds like a great way to get back on track if you’re Japan.
