Since 1988, China has won every gold medal in Olympic play. Shi Tingmao is the odds-on favorite to win the gold in this year’s Olympics, with fellow countrywoman He Zi the favorite to win silver. Zi won the silver in 2012 as well, and it could be another incredible showing for China in the diving events at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The gold and bronze medal winners from the 2012 London Games will not be participating in 2016, as China’s Wu Minixia and Mexico’s Laura Sanchez Soto will not defend their medals.

The United States hopes for a medal in this event rests on the shoulders of Kassidy Cook, who missed out on qualifying for the 2012 Olympics by a half of a point. Cook will get her chance in this year’s Games, and her journey starts Friday.
