The Florida State Seminoles, ranked No. 4 in the initial coaches poll, will be without quarterback Sean Maguire for 4-6 weeks due to a foot injury

As is the cast most years entering the college football season, there are tremendous expectations for the Florida State Seminoles. Jimbo Fisher’s team is ranked No. 4 in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll and could compete for a national title. However, they’re going to be without their most veteran quarterback, Sean Maguire, at the start of the year.

On Saturday, Fisher announced that redshirt senior quarterback Sean Maguire sustained would need surgery to repair a foot injury, per Warchant.com. As a result, the senior will miss 4-6 weeks. Given that the season begins in roughly three weeks, that means Maguire will be out for at least the opener and likely longer.

The most interesting part of Fisher’s announcement is that he’s yet to name a starter at quarterback for Florida State. Given the injury to Maguire, one would assume that redshirt freshman Deondre Francois would be given the honors. In fact, many people assumed that Francois would take the job regardless of Sean Maguire’s availability or health.

For whatever reason, though, Fisher won’t name his starter just yet. That being said, it doesn’t truly matters who’s starting at quarterback for the Seminoles. Just as it was with Everett Golson and Maguire last season, the primary job of the FSU quarterback is to turn and hand the ball to Dalvin Cook. As long as the eventual starter is able to do that, the Noles are going to be just fine.

However, Sean Maguire’s injury does set the Seminoles up for a debate mid-season. Whenever he returns from his injury, there will be talk of if he should take the job from whoever is starting. As for now, though, Fisher and company just need to focus on naming the starter for Week 1.
