The second day of 2016 Rio Olympics table tennis team play has concluded so who advanced?

The second day of Olympics table tennis team play is in the books and China has come out on top of women’s action, as expected.Both the men’s and women’s teams have been dominating team play after the singles victors for gold and silver medals were also from China.

The women are now entering semifinal action after completing quarterfinal play and the men finished their first round after starting it on Friday. The United States he already been eliminated from both brackets, but that just means that it’s time for thr Chinese team to repeat as gold medal winners.

The Olympics have been dominated by China since the sport was introduced in 1988.

Men’s first round team play

The men’s bracket is a day behind the women as the four first-round matchups finished up on Saturday, leading into quarterfinals play on Sunday.

Germany’s Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Timo Boll surpassed Chinese Taipei with relative ease, 3-1 to advance to the quarters. Hong Kong had no problem with Australia in straight sets, Austria beat Portugal in four and Japan defeated Poland in five sets.

Women’s quarterfinals

The women’s bracket is completing quarterfinal action Saturday.

China took down North Korea in straight sets, Singapore defeated South Korea in five, Japan swept Austria and Germany had its way with Hong Kong to advance to the semis.

The third day of team play will resume on Sunday morning.
