When will Usain Bolt run his next race in the 2016 Rio Olympics?

The wait for Jamaica’s Usain Bolt to run his first race in the 2016 Rio Olympics finally ended this morning. He ran in the seventh heat of the men’s 100m dash and jogged his way to a time of 10.07. Bolt finished in first place for his heat and automatically qualified for the semifinals.

It was clear that the “Lightning Bolt” was conserving as much energy as possible. His start wasn’t the best, and he spent most of the race observing the other sprinters. Once he got to the 60m mark, he slightly opened his stride and glided in for the win.

Bolt’s time was the fourth-fastest behind Justin Gatlin of the USA (10.01), Ben Youssef Meité of the Ivory Coast (10.03) and Andre De Grasse of Canada (10.04). However, his race looked like it took the least effort. One can only imagine what he will run for his next race when he puts more effort into it.

Usain’s next race will be in the second heat of the semifinals tomorrow, and it will be more competitive. It will include the aforementioned De Grasse, Trayvon Bromell of the USA and Kim Collins of Saint Kitts and Nevis. All three of those sprinters have seasonal bests of sub-10 in the dash. Additionally, Bromell has clocked a 9.84, so it should push Bolt to run faster.

In what will be his last Olympics, Bolt is looking to complete the unprecedented “triple-triple.” It’s where an athlete wins three gold medals for the same events in three Olympics. His other events are the 200m dash and the 4x100m relay.

Bolt’s semifinal heat will start tomorrow at 9:05 p.m. EST.
