The first Olympics golf tournament since 1904 is in the books, as Great Britain’s Justin Rose wins the gold medal.

For the first time since 1904, the sport of golf returned to the Olympics. On Thursday, Great Britain’s Justin Rose got the tournament started with a bang, making the first hole-in-one in modern Olympics history. On Sunday, Rose capped off his incredible tournament with a gold medal.

In order to win the gold medal, Rose had to stave off Henrik Stenson, who is having the best year of his professional career. The Swedish golfer won his first major in 2016, taking the Open Championship, and was in contention for the entire week. When all was said and done, Stenson finished in second place, winning a silver medal for the country of Sweden.

The duo traded birdies all day long, as Rose tried to cling to the one-shot lead he had coming into Sunday. They were tied at -15 heading into the final hole. On the 72nd hole, Rose picked picked up a birdie, and a gold medal, as Stenson could not make his birdie put.

Team USA was represented on the podium as well, as Matt Kuchar finished in the bronze medal position. Kuchar, who was not the biggest American name in the field, played better than his countrymen, Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler, and Patrick Reed. For Kuchar, he continues to be one of the most consistent golfers in recent memory.

Kuchar was amazing on Sunday, posting an 8-under-63. All day long, the American climbed the leaderboard, before finally settling into third place. Grabbing the bronze medal must have made the trip to Rio worth it for Kuchar.
