So was Ryan Lochte actually robbed at gunpoint in Rio?

There are conflicting reports about whether or not gold medalist Ryan Lochte was robbed at gunpoint at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Reports about Lochte being robbed came out early this morning.

The weird thing is, the IOC’s director of communications Mark Adams denies that it ever happened.

Lochte’s coach David Marsh has also denied that the robbery happened. So what actually happened? Did Lochte get robbed? According to his mother, who Lochte contacted immediately following the robbery, yes it did happen.

“I think they’re all shaken up. There were a few of them,” Lochte’s mother said, via USA Today. “No, they were just, they just took their wallets and basically that was it.”

Rio has been criticized for not having proper security. It’s not a good look if this actually happened. Even worse, the IOC is denying that it happened. So either the IOC is lying or Lochte and his mother are lying.

He has had a successful swimming career. Perhaps it would have been even more successful had he not hit his prime at the same time as Michael Phelps. He has won 12 medals, which is second all-time among male swimmers. Lochte has won six gold medals, three silver medals, and three bronze medals. Phelps has won 23 gold medals and 28 overall.

Lochte, just like Phelps, could be participating in his last Olympics. He is 32 years old and he will be 36 in 2020. It’s hard to see him sticking around that long. While Lochte could still swim in the 2020 Olympics because swimming has been proven to not just be a sport for the young, considering the events that he participates in, he could be on his way out. Lochte only medaled in one event at Rio.
