2016 Rio Olympics results: Water polo – August 14
Team USA men finish Olympics with a win and 5th place; full results from the men’s Olympics water polo preliminary tournament on August 14th.
The United States played undefeated Italy on Sunday, knowing that there was no chance at making the quarterfinals. Team USA pulled off a major upset win over Italy, beating them 10-7 and ending their Olympics run in fifth place in the Group B bracket. Italy goes on to play in the quarterfinals.
Going into Sunday’s matches, Hungary, Greece and Brazil were atop the leader board for Group A, while Croatia, Spain and Italy were in a three-way tie for first place with six points each. After Sunday, Hungary and Spain remain the only teams with perfect scores of 7. Japan is still at the bottom of Group A with zero points, while France is at the bottom of Group B. France edged Croatia on Sunday 9-8, which gets them on the board for the first time in the preliminaries.
Team USA notched its first win in the men’s Olympics water polo tournament on August 10th, beating France 6-3. The United States played a dominant match, leading the entire game. With less than five minutes to play in the fourth quarter, France was able to score a point to narrow the lead to 2, but the United States responded with another goal to finish the match 6-3.
On Friday, the United States fell to Montenegro 8 to 5. While Team USA started getting hot at the right time, their inconsistent play, like losing to a middle ground team like Montenegro but beating an undefeated team like Italy, is why they ended up with a 5th place finish.
