Sunday featured only one NFL Preseason game on the schedule, but there was enough news around the league to make up for it.

The 49ers played the Houston Texans on Sunday in the only preseason game on the NFL schedule. For all the hoopla surrounding the Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick quarterback battle, not much was decided on Sunday. Kaepernick, who did not practice two days this week with a sore shoulder, did not suit up for the game. Gabbert, who many believe has a chance to be the team’s Week 1 start, played well, tossing a 43-yard touchdown to Vance MacDonald in the first quarter.

The star of the game was a Houston Texans quarterback, though not the one Texans fans were hoping for. Tom Savage replaced Brock Osweiler and went off, tossing two touchdowns for the Texans. In total, Savage was 14 for 24 passing, racking up 168 yards in the air. Osweiler, who was the team’s big free agent pick up, threw for only 27 yards.

The Los Angeles Rams gave away the farm to select Jared Goff with the first pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, and based on his first preseason game, he may be far from ready to help the team. Goff was only 4 of 9 passing for 38 yards, and he was intercepted on the second pass of his career. Dallas Cowboys rookie Dak Prescott looked really good in the game, completing 10 of 12 passes with two touchdowns.

Bad news for Victor Cruz, as the former superstar wide receiver of the New York Giants is back on the shelf. After a devastating knee injury in 2014, and a calf injury in 2015, Cruz has been trying to get himself back to where he once was. Now it is a groin injury that has to be reevaluated, and with the Giants drafting stud wideout Sterling Shepard from Oklahoma in the 2016 NFL Draft, Cruz may be relegated to bench duty if he ever gets healthy.

Last preseason, IK Enemkpali punched Geno Smith in the jaw, cause the New York Jets quarterback to miss time and eventually lose his starting job to Ryan Fitzpatrick. This season, it is Enemkpali that will be out, though this time he hurt himself. Enemkpali tore his ACL during the Buffalo Bills Week 1 preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts, and an MRI revealed the tear. Enemkpali will miss the entire 2016 season.
