The 2016 Rio Olympics Men’s 3m springboard competition begins on Monday, and 29 divers head to the board to compete for a spot in the semifinals.

The men take to the springboard on Monday, as the 2016 Rio Olympics Men’s 3m springboard competition gets underway. There will be 29 divers in the preliminary round on Monday, and the field will be cut to 18 for the semifinals on Tuesday. Later that day, the final round will take place, as the 12 remaining divers go for their medals.

The 2012 London Olympics saw Russia’s Ilya Zakahrov take home the gold medal, beating the field with an incredible score of 555.90. Qin Kai and He Chong, both from China, won the silver and bronze medals, respectively. Chong and Kai are not in the field in 2016, so the Russian could make it two in a row.

In order for that to happen, Zakahrov will have to navigate through an incredibly talented pool of divers. The Chinese tandem of Cao Yuan and He Chao are expected to be the front-runners for the gold medal. Yuan has already earned a medal in Rio, as he was a part of the Chinese duo that won bronze in the Men’s 3m synchronized springboard. Yuan won that bronze with Kai, though they came up nearly 11 points shy of the gold medal winners.

Great Britain won the gold in the 3m synchronized event, and one half of that duo will be competing in the individual event. Jack Laugher showed his talent during the synchronized final, and should challenge for at least a bronze medal in this competition.

In each round, divers will perform six dives, with no limit to the total degree of difficulty. However, all of the five diving groups must be represented. Those groups are forward, backwards, twisting, reverse, and inward. Scores do not carry over from round to round, and the top three scores in the finals will receive medals.
