The Grand Prix Freestyle competition for dressage individual takes place Monday, August 15. The top 18 riders from the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Special phases made the cut; a maximum of three riders from one team can proceed to the dressage individual medal finals. The Freestyle stands alone in determining the medal winners, all riders start the day with a clean slate.
Team U.S.A. is represented in the Grand Prix Freestyle by Steffen Peters on Leglolas 92, Allison Brock on Rosevelt and Laura Graves on Verdades. Each rider in the freestyle choreographs the program to carefully chosen music that showcases her horse and fulfills compulsory technical movements. Look for brilliance, degree of difficulty, and how well the music and horse’s movements mesh.
Current dressage individual medal Olympic champion Charlotte Dujardin of Great Britain is defending her title. Throughout the earlier dressage competitions, NBC’s on-air commentators alluded to Dujardin’s extraordinary freestyle program. If Charlotte and Valegro perform flawlessly, another Olympic gold for the pair is likely and deserved.
