The 2016 Rio Olympics field hockey competition heats up on Monday, as the women play their four quarterfinal matches. The men will begin their semifinals on Tuesday.

On Monday, the 2016 Rio Olympics field hockey competition ramps up, as the final eight countries will battle it out in the quarterfinals, with the final four heading to Wednesday’s semifinal action. Four countries were eliminated during the preliminary round, leaving the best eight countries standing.

Great Britain has been amazing so far during the women’s tournament, racking up 15 points to be the top seed in the quarterfinals. They will face a Spain team that only earned six points during the preliminary round, so expect Great Britain to make easy work of them. Great Britain won the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, beating New Zealand in the bronze medal match.

The United States has been led by Katie O’Donnell during the 2016 Rio Olympics, as she is the top scorer in the tournament. The US team was third in the points during the preliminary round, and will take on Germany on Monday. Germany was able to collect seven points during the prelims, and does not appear to be that strong this year.

In a rematch of the gold medal game in 2012, the Netherlands will be taking on Argentina in the quarterfinals. Netherlands won their third gold medal in this event during the 2012 London Olympics, and they have a legitimate shot to repeat in 2016. Argentina has not played well, and Netherlands will likely be back in the semifinals.

The fourth match-up is New Zealand versus Australia. This should be the best game of the day, as both teams have a legitimate shot at winning. New Zealand lost to Great Britain in the bronze medal match in 2012, so they will be looking for another shot at a medal in 2016. Expect this one to go down to the wire.
