The Braves, with this season already over, decide to give one of their young players a shot. Dansby Swanson will make his MLB debut on Wednesday.

The Atlanta Braves 2016 season is pretty much in the books. The team is 26.5 games back in the National League East and 18 back of the Wild Card. With that being the case, The Braves and its fans are looking for something to look forward to for next season. The team traded Erick Aybar early Tuesday and will call up top prospect Dansby Swanson.

Swanson was acquired by the Braves last year in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks. From a realistic standpoint, the Diamondbacks gave up a lot to get Shelby Miller. And it’s obvious that the trade hasn’t worked out for them. It’s now time to see if the Braves’ side of the deal holds up.

He didn’t do much in High-A as he only played in 21 games. Though, most of his damage came at the beginning of the season. Over the last 28 days, he is hitting .229/.316/.313 with one home run, 10 RBI and 14 runs. With these numbers, many people are questioning the call.

Swanson hit .289 with one home run, 11 RBI and 19 runs scored in 22 Low-A games last year. In 105 games between High-A and Double-A in the Braves farm system, he is hitting .275 with nine homers, 55 RBI, 68 runs and 13 steals.

It looked like the jump to Double-A exposed Swanson a bit. I’m a little skeptical as well with Swanson in the majors. He displayed some speed and power, but his monthly totals have dropped from April until now.

Swanson has the potential to be a top-10 shortstop in the future. However, I think he needed at least another season in the minors before getting the call.

Swanson is already owned in 2.7 percent of ESPN leagues. I can guarantee that those are the deep, dynasty leagues. Unless you’re in one of those leagues, I can’t see a situation where you pick up Swanson without waiting to see what he does first. There are plenty of other shortstops available on the waiver wire worth picking up.
