The Eagles starting kicker, Caleb Sturgis, earned himself a concussion after a punt folly in pre-game activities.

So far, the preseason hasn’t been so kind to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The karma carousel began when rookie QB Carson Wentz contracted a rib fracture in a game vs. Tampa Bay, which will plot Wentz on the bench for a few weeks, leaving the job to former Missouri Tigers QB Chase Daniel.

Focusing back on Sturgis, the Eagles relied on the 26-year old from the University of Florida to chip in on the kicking duties. Eerily enough, however, his replacement, Cody Parkey, needed Sturgis when Parkey had a season-ending groin injury last year.

Though the Eagles continue to experience more misfortunes than good news, the fact that their two starting kickers are playing hot potato on the injury list spells out discouragement.

After his debut season with Miami, Caleb Sturgis won’t see any on-field action in Philadelphia until his medical evaluations state that he’s cleared to play. (For the Wentz fans, his injury will be excused once the preseason ends.)

Fast forwarding to tonight’s preseason game vs. the Steelers, Sturgis might have one man to blame: placeholder Donnie Jones.

Before joining the Eagles, Jones played for four other teams (Seattle, Miami, St. Louis, Houston), assigned to the same position. Coincidentally enough, the man has maintained pseudo-brute health, missing only a handful of games since entering the league in 2004.

That said, there’s no doubt that Jones may take the heat for his negligence in tonight’s incident.

(So much for the city known for brotherly love.)

It’s also worth noting that, since Sturgis is a Gator alum, he’s not the only one from said college facing the music in the headlines: Ryan Lochte, a 2007 graduate in sports management, is in some dirty water in Rio that involves a robbery.

While “death-by-punt” is a laughable offense, it serves as a lesson: Wear a helmet or get rocked by a rogue football.
