With essentially on the weekend remaining at the 2016 Rio Olympics, things are starting to wind down as a whole at the Games. However, Day 13 means that things are just getting warmed up in synchronized swimming. After the duets medals were handed out earlier in the week, it’s now time for the always fascinating Teams Technical Routine competition where the best squads in the country will be coming at one another—in synchronized form, of course.

Russia has had a stranglehold on the Teams Technical Routine event in Olympics synchronized swimming for quite some time now. The Russians have won the gold medal at every Games dating all the way back to 2000. It’s simply one of the sports that they’ve been able to establish a level of dominance at that many other countries simply haven’t. However, they’ll have some competition at Rio 2016.

Admittedly, it’s still the Russians that are sitting in the driver’s seat heading towards gold. However, the Chinese team has looked fantastic leading up to the Games and could make a serious push to usurp Russia from their Olympic throne. Meanwhile, Ukraine looms as a dark horse to possibly do the same, though it’d be a shock to not see those three teams all sharing the podium in some order when it’s all said and done.
