Maine

Joan Benoit is a runner. She is most famous for being the first female runner to win a gold medal in the marathon at the Olympics. Benoit also dominated at the Boston Marathon. She still holds the fastest times at the Chicago marathon and the Olympic marathon. After retiring, she wrote several books about running and has been involved in multiple charities.

Born in Portland, Ian Crocker won five medals at the Summer Olympics as a swimmer. He was a part of the gold medal 4x100m medley in 2000, 2004, and 2008. Crocker also won a silver medal in the 100m butterfly in 2004 and a bronze in the 4x100m freestyle relay.

Paul Kariya spent his college years at the University of Maine. He was a phenom from day one, scoring 100 points in 39 games in his freshman year. Kariya became the first freshman to win the Hobey Baker Award, which goes to the best player in college hockey. He only spent one full season in Maine, but it was a glorious one.

Cindy Blodgett is a female basketball player. She is the first woman to lead Division I in scoring for four consecutive seasons. Blodgett went on to coach at the University of Maine and spent time in the WNBA as well.
