Women’s Basketball Gold Medal Game: USA vs Spain

After 15 days at the 2016 Rio Olympics women’s basketball tournament, there only are two games remaining. In the final game of the day, the gold medal for the event will be on the line. Predictably, it’s two of the medal-favorites from the pre-Olympics assessment that’ll be facing off. On Saturday, August 20, it’ll be Team USA vs Spain to decide who takes home the gold medal from Rio.

Team USA have been an untouchable force throughout these Olympic Games. The best that any team could hope to do to this point has been to keep things close for one half. Spain may well be the best team that the Americans have played, but they’ve also already dispatched them once in Rio as part of the group stage. There’s simply no answer for the likes of Diana Taurasi and Maya Moore. Moreover, their bench of Elena Delle Donne and Sylvia Fowles is just as lethal. Though the stakes are raised, it’s hard to not expect domination from Team USA once again.

As stated, though, Spain won’t roll over for the Americans in the gold medal game. They’ll surely be trying to find a way to free up Laura Nicholls to be the catalyst for their offense. That’ll be easier said than done against the stifling Team USA defense. Playing for a gold medal, though, you have to think that the Spanish effort will be their most spirited yet.
