28. Hilton Coliseum
In-state rival Iowa might have a football legacy to make Iowa State fans purple with jealousy, but the Cyclones have themselves one of the best basketball arenas in the country. Hilton Coliseum has an aura that can turn so-so Cyclones teams into unstoppable behemoths at home.
The Cyclones’ home court advantage certainly has a supernatural feel to it. Iowa State basketball rose to national prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s under legendary head coach Johnny Orr, who coined the term Hilton Magic to describe the effect Iowa’s home court had on his team.
The Cyclones have been one of the better teams on the hardwood in the Big Eight/12 for the last 30 years. Orr passed in 2013, but he has surely been back to his old haunt to experience some of that Hilton Magic.
Basketball is a huge part of the culture in the Midwest. While states like Kansas, Indiana and Kentucky claim basketball as a religion, Iowa too has a cathedral for college hoops that is right up there with the best of them. Hilton Coliseum defines basketball in Iowa. What kind of ghost wouldn’t want to pay a visit?
