Who could be fantasy football replacements for Tony Romo?

Tony Romo had been an injury risk coming into the 2016 NFL season. He missed most of 2015 with a broken collarbone and has dealt with a handful of back injuries in his career. His absence caused dismay at the quarterback position for the Cowboys, who finished among the worst in the league last season.

Well, Romo went down once again. According to Jean-Jacques Taylor of ESPN Dallas, the Cowboys quarterback has a fractured bone in his back. There isn’t a timetable for his return.

Romo’s injury may hurt the Cowboys, who will have to rely on other options. However, this could impact Fantasy Football participants as well.

While Romo’s value didn’t seem too high for the 2016 season, he could have been relied on as someone’s starting quarterback. The 36-year-old has had a productive career, which may warrant a higher selection in a Fantasy Football draft.

As for who could replace him on your team, there are a few options.

The first name is Dak Prescott, the Cowboys’ rookie quarterback from Mississippi State. He is 22-of-27 on completions for 338 yards, six touchdowns and no interception in the preseason. While this may not be a clear indicator of what he could do on the field, Prescott should still be owned by all teams if he’s going to start for Dallas. He’ll provide plenty of passing and rushing statistics, potentially leading to big points.

James Winston of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could be another option. ESPN has him listed as their 19th-best quarterback, and could be available in your respective league’s free agent pool. Winston is coming off a 4,000-plus yard season in his rookie campaign, and could be in line to increase that total.

Robert Griffin III of the Cleveland Browns may be another option. He didn’t start a game for the Washington Redskins in 2015 after losing the starting job to Kirk Cousins. RGIII is getting a second opportunity with the Browns, and if he can show any signs of production from his rookie season, fantasy owners could reap benefits.

New England’s Jimmy Garoppolo could be a short-term option as a replacement for Romo. Garoppolo will start the Patriot’s first four games of the season until Tom Brady returns from suspension in Week 5. With passing options like Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman available, the Eastern Illinois alumnus could be worth owning for the first month.

Teddy Bridgewater of the Minnesota Vikings is another intriguing replacement. He’s going into his third year as their quarterback, and could be prepped for a breakout season if he can bring all of his tools together. With various passing options and Adrian Peterson in the backfield, maybe Bridgewater can show more upside than he did in his first two years.
