The Washington Redskins have signed former New York Giants defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins to a one-year deal.

The Washington Redskins have signed 12-year NFL veteran Cullen Jenkins, according to Mike Jones of the Washington Post. Just hours after it was reported he was being worked out by the team, the defensive end was inked to a one-year deal.

A 6-foot-2, 292-pounder out of Central Michigan, Jenkins has 47.5 sacks in his career. Jenkins broke in with the Green Bay Packers. after seven seasons there, Jenkins played two with the Philadelphia Eagles and the last three with the New York Giants. His best season came in his last season in Green Bay where he recorded seven sacks in just 11 games.

Jenkins, 35, has 230 career tackles and last season in New York he had 15 tackles and three sacks in 16 games with 14 starts.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport confirmed the report and the signing is more about adding depth to the Redskins roster. The team plans a defensive line of Chris Baker, Kedric Golston and Ricky Jean-Francois although they could be looking for younger alternatives to Jenkins when teams begin to pare their rosters prior to opening week.

GM Scot McCloughan cut veterans Stephen Bowen and Barry Cofield in an attempt to change the look of the line by adding Jean-Francois and Stephen Paea to add more youth. While the addition of Jenkins runs counter to that thinking, he appears to be a good enough veteran presence to stay with the club after final cuts.

Paea is a six year veteran who landed on injured reserve after 11 games after recording just 1.5 sacks and 11 tackles.

Evander ‘Ziggy’ Hood, who was signed to a reserve/futures contract, is 29 and still hanging around after the first cuts. His youth could serve him well to make the opening roster and because he was brought in to provide the kind of depth Washington is hoping for.
