Baylor University has suspended wide receiver Ishmael Zamora three games for an animal abuse incident occurring in Waco, Texas in July.

Baylor University announced its plan of action to suspend wide receiver Ishmael Zamora on Tuesday evening. Zamora received a “Class ‘C’ Misdemeanor in July for beating a dog with a belt. Baylor says he will be suspended for three games for this incident.

Baylor interim head coach Jim Grobe commented on the university’s decision to suspend Zamora: “Our football program does not condone this behavior by anyone. We are deeply saddened by it and worked together with the University to hold Ishmael accountable for his actions.”

Zamora would apologize publicly for the embarrassing incident: “I am sorry that I took out my frustration on my dog and accept the punishment that comes with it.”

The Bears wideout is one of the wide receivers expected to help Baylor’s Air Raid attack this season now that Corey Coleman plays for the NFL’s Cleveland Browns. He will miss the following games for the 2016 Bears: Northwestern State (September 2nd), SMU (September 10th), and at Rice (September 16th).

Missing three games might seem like a tough punishment, but Baylor knows what it is doing by suspending Zamora at the start of the year. Baylor always schedules an easy non-conference schedule. The Bears should easily beat the Northwestern State Demons, the SMU Mustangs, and the Rice Owls in the non-conference without Zamora.

If Baylor wanted to send a message that animal abuse isn’t okay, flip it around and have Zamora sit out the first three Big 12 games of the season: Oklahoma State (September 24th), at Iowa State (October 1st), Kansas (October 15th).

Grobe may have the good conscience to help turnaround a loose ship program in Waco, Texas, but Zamora’s incident is yet another situation that reflects poorly on the Power 5 school and its football team.
