Longhorns receiver Jerrod Heard blew past the Notre Dame defense and nearly scored after a deep pass.

The Texas Longhorns are putting a lot of faith in some of their young players. One of them is third-year wide receiver Jerrod Heard. Heard is a great vertical threat despite just recently has been making the switch from quarterback to wide receiver. That’s a tough transition to make, but Heard is doing it on the fly. He proved how far he has come in Week One against Notre Dame when he nearly scored on a deep pass.

Texas made a bit of a controversial decision by switching Heard to receiver. That is one of the reasons why they are giving true freshman Shane Buechele significant playing time at quarterback. Buechele is the first true freshman to start at Texas in Week One since 1944. He will split time with Tyrone Swoopes, who has more experience.

Heard’s easy transition to receiver could make Texas look wise for making that bold decision. The success of Buechele could as well. He is in his first NCAA game, but he has been quite impressive. Buechele has shown no signs of nerves or butterflies in his stomach. Some might have rushed that deep throw to Heard. Buechele wisely took his time and it paid off big time.

The junior wide receiver was moved to receiver because he wasn’t a good fit in the Longhorns’ brand new up-tempo offense. Heard is, however, a big guy who can move, so perhaps a transition to receiver could pay off big time. The Longhorns are relying on their offense making the transition to a more up tempo pace. So far, Heard and Buechele are certainly showing that they are comfortable in it.
