22. Milwaukee Brewers

Last championship: Never

Last winning season: 2014

The Brewers have spent the majority of their existence starting up from the cellar of two separate divisions (and in two different leagues). Since the Seattle Pilots rebranded themselves as the Milwaukee Brewers in 1970 (after losing 98 games in their only year in Seattle), the Brewers themselves have managed 14 90-loss seasons and are well en route to No. 15 this season.

Yet what is perhaps most remarkable about the Brewers’ struggles is that they are not league-specific, as they spent a whopping 29 years as an American League squad before coming over to the National League in 1998. And while the team has scraped together a few high-water marks, (including four MVP seasons from Robin Young, Rollie Fingers, and Ryan Braun), and reached the 1982 World Series behind the exploits of Harvey’s Wallbangers, they’ve also gone very long stretches without much to get excited about.

Between postseason appearances (1982 and 2008), Milwaukee had 11 last or next-to-last-place finishes between their stints in the AL East and NL Central. Coupled with the fact that their most recent superstar, Ryan Braun, was flagged for an incredibly flagrant PED suspension, it’s no surprise that the franchise is once again headed for another years-long downward swing.

It is a special breed of struggle that’s befallen fans of the Brew Crew. And no amount of delicious beer or giant-sausage races is liable to change that — at least not without a steadfastly solid ball club on the field.
