49ers to donate $1 million to groups addressing social inequalities

The San Francisco 49ers will reportedly donate the same amount of money as their outspoke quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, to groups addressing inequalities.

For the last two weeks, a massive amount of attention has been paid to the San Francisco 49ers for something that hasn’t taken place on the field of play, but on the sideline involving a man who is now their backup quarterback.

After Colin Kaepernick began his routine of not standing during the national anthem as a protest toward what he describes as unfair treatment of minorities in this country, the quarterback announced he was going to donate the first $1 million he makes this season to groups that help raise the dialogue about such issues in an effort to hopefully change things someday.

As it turns out, the team is also putting its money toward trying to help change things, and hopefully, some people’s attitudes. The 49ers are going to donate $1 million as well to two groups that specialize in addressing social inequalities.

According to NBC Sports’ Pro Football Talk, the two groups are the Silicon Valley Community Foundation and the San Francisco Foundation:

"Per their website the Silicon Valley Community Foundation works to provide “leadership, expertise and capital to help address social issues in our region” by commissioning research, conducting public discussions, advocating on issues and creating initiatives with partner organizations.The San Francisco Foundation says it aims to be “a catalyst for change to build strong communities, foster civic leadership, and promote philanthropy” and that “our challenge is to ensure that everyone can thrive and reach their full potential.”"

The 49ers have stuck by Kaepernick the whole time, and now are becoming part of the solution instead of those who are brushing aside the issues he is trying to bring up — issues that need to be addressed but are avoided by many Americans who don’t want to admit there are actual problems.
