Opening night could have looked much different for the Broncos if a deal could have been made for Case Keenum.

If it weren’t for the Broncos having trust in Trevor Siemian, a trade for Los Angeles Rams starting quarterback Case Keenum could have been in the works.

Denver kept an eye on the University of Houston prodigy who still holds the record for most career yards in a collegiate career (19,217 passing yard, 897 rushing yards) throughout the preseason and liked what they saw. Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak and Keenum go back to their days with the Houston Texans during the 2013 season.

The Broncos were hesitant with their trade talks and never offered big names like Aqib Talib or Bradley Roby, according to Ian Rapoport. Seemingly, this is the only way the Rams would have gone through with the trade if it was ever officially offered.

After Siemian showcased his talents in the preseason and won the starting job over Mark Sanchez and rookie Paxton Lynch, the Broncos pulled out of all trade talks with the Rams, having full confidence in the first year starter.

If the trade would have gone through, the Rams might have been searching for answers going in to week one.

Assuming the Broncos wouldn’t have dealt Siemian, the Rams would have had a choice to make at the quarterback position after first overall pick Jared Goff is deemed “not ready” to get the start in Los Angeles. Second year man, Sean Mannion would have likely been named the starter for the Rams after throwing four touchdowns and just one interception in the preseason but who knows.

Goff might have been thrown into the starting role even though he clearly isn’t ready for the spotlight that LA has to offer. The Rams might have gone out and picked up Mark Sanchez or Michael Vick until Goff is ready.

All of these are hypotheticals, of course, but tonight’s game could have had a much different story line if Keenum had been donning the orange and blue instead of Siemian.
