Edinson Cavani scores bullet header against Arsenal (Video)
Edinson Cavani opens the scoring within minutes of kick off with a bullet header to put Paris Saint-Germain one goal to the good.
Arsenal have had a whole host of problems in the Champions League in recent years. The continual failure to win the group has seen them draw some of the toughest teams that Europe has to offer, perennially falling at the first hurdle in the knockout stages.
Well, once again, the group stage is not running as smoothly as Arsene Wenger would hope. It took 42 seconds!
With the match just underway, the Arsenal left flank was exposed thanks to the pace of Serge Aurier. The Paris Saint-Germain right-back surged forward, took advantage of poor pressing from Nacho Monreal, who has started the season poorly for the Gunners, delivered a deliciously flighted ball in, allowing center forward Edinson Cavani to do his worst.
The Uruguayan, having slipped between Shkodran Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny thanks to terrible marking from the new centre-half partnership, jumped high and powered home a bullet header into the far bottom corner, giving goalkeeper David Ospina no chance whatsoever.
It is an early body blow for Arsenal’s European hopes, but for a PSG side that has been doubted by the media thanks to the recent departures of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and David Luiz, two centerpieces to the success that the French champions have had in recent seasons.
Arsenal have come back into the game a little bit since the goal, but it may not matter given the strength of PSG’s backline. One thing’s for sure, the Gunners will need to keep far closer tabs on Cavani throughout the match. Otherwise they might have to say goodbye to the group’s top spot already.
