Villarreal’s Bruno Soriano gave his side the lead against Real Madrid with a chipped penalty.

Real Madrid dominated most of the firs half of their La Liga match against Villarreal. Cristiano Ronaldo missed a good headed chance from a James Rodriguez cross, but other than that Real weren’t really able to turn their possession into clearcut chances.

Villarreal defended well and were happy to play on the break. As the clock ticked towards half-time, their approach paid off. Raphael Varane lost the ball at the back for Real, which allowed Manu Trigueros space to shoot.

Sergio Ramos was in position to block the shot, but for some reason threw his hands in the air. The ref blew his whistle for a penalty, which Bruno scored with supreme confidence, chipping the ball down the middle as Keylor Navas dived to his left.

Real were perfect heading into this game, winning all four of their games without really struggling at all. They were less impressive in their opening game of the Champions League group stage, however, and required two late goals — one from a Ronaldo free-kick — to win the game.

They will be desperate to maintain that perfect start today, especially since their two main rivals for the La Liga title, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, play each other later today. Real already lead both of those teams by three and four points, respectively, but will very disappointed if they can’t extend the gap to at least one of those teams today.

Villarreal are very good team, especially at the back, but this is the sort of game Real need to win if they have any hope of reclaiming their La Liga crown. Zinedine Zidane’s side will presumably come out firing in the second half, but the more they push forward, the more dangerous Villarreal will become on the counter.
