Russia took it to Finland at the World Cup of Hockey, beating them 2-0 to ensure a semifinal berth.

After North America’s dramatic 4-3 overtime win over Sweden, Russia came into their World Cup of Hockey game against Finland needing a win. Vladimir Tarasenko scored less than four minutes into the second period, and Ivan Telegin scored less than two minutes later. Evgeni Malkin scored an early third period goal. That’s all the offense they needed, beating Finland 3-0.

Russia came out strong in the second period following a very weak first period. Finland, despite having most of the hockey world rooting for them, was not able to pull off a victory. Had Finland won, North America would have advanced instead of Russia. Finland was not able to challenge Russian goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky that much, blowing some big opportunities to score.

Team Russia has some issues to work out before their next game. Specifically, their power play has been struggling mightily. They have yet to score on seven power play opportunities during the tournament. Russia has also struggled a bit on offense, though they have performed better than expected defensively.

Players Of The Game

Bobrovsky made some incredible saves in net for Russia. The Blue Jackets goaltender has been as good as he’s ever been. In fact, he hasn’t looked this good since winning the 2012-13 Vezina Trophy. Tarasenko led team Russia with three shots on goal and had the game-winning goal in the second period. For Finland, Patrik Laine had two shots on goal and two hits while not allowing a goal. Rasmus Ristolainen was their best defenseman.

What’s Next

With Russia’s win, the semifinal matches for the World Cup of Hockey have been set. Canada will take on Russia on Saturday Sept. 24, while Europe will face Sweden on Sunday, Sept. 25. Sadly, this means the end of North America’s World Cup run. However, hats off to them for having a phenomenal tournament.
