Stanford trailed late against UCLA, but a great 10-play drive led by Ryan Burns in the final minute led the Cardinal to a 22-13 victory against the Bruins on the road.

Stanford almost stumbled into their showdown with No. 9 Washington next week against the UCLA Bruins, but Ryan Burns had his “welcome to the spotlight” moment.

With the Cardinal trailing 13-9 in the final minutes of Saturday night’s game at the Rose Bowl, Burns led a 10-play, 70-yard drive that ended with a touchdown and the go-ahead score with less than 30 seconds left.

They always say don’t throw the fade on the goal line.

Burns and Stanford went away from their bread-and-butter of running between the tackles and went to the outside. After Burns threw a high, hanging fade to the left corner of the endzone, JJ Arcega-Whiteside came down with it to give Stanford the lead for good.

The touchdown and extra point gave the Cardinal a 16-13 lead with one last chance left for the Bruins to tie or take the lead.

Although Josh Rosen and the Bruins put forth a valiant effort throughout the night and in the final seconds, a sack and another score from the Cardinal iced the 22-13 victory for the seventh-ranked team in the nation.

For Stanford, it’s a huge victory heading into a meeting with the unbeaten Washington Huskies next week. If Christian McCaffrey does catch Lamar Jackson in the Heisman Trophy race, this would be a good game to put on a show.

For UCLA, their Pac-12 title hopes aren’t completely dead, but they needed this win at home to really build some good momentum. There’s still plenty of football to be played, and although it’s not a bad loss by any means, it’s one the Bruins couldn’t afford early in the season.
