Here’s how to watch Saturday’s nonconference showdown between the Virginia Tech Hokies and East Carolina Pirates.

The Virginia Tech Hokies will look to avoid their third straight loss against the East Carolina Pirates on Saturday afternoon at Lane Stadium in the final nonconference game for both teams.

First-year head coach Justin Fuente doesn’t figure to have the Hokies in contention for an ACC title right away but still has some talent to work with. Following a disappointing loss to Tennessee in which the team outgained the Volunteers but lost five fumbles, Virginia Tech bounced back with a 49-0 destruction of Boston College last week to move to 2-1.

The Hokies have allowed just 85.5 passing yards per game so far, the second-fewest of any team in the nation behind Tulane. Junior quarterback Greg Stroman owns two of Virginia Tech’s five interceptions on the season. On the other side of the ball, quarterback Jerod Evans tied a school record with five touchdown passes against the Eagles.

East Carolina has won both of the last two matchups against Virginia Tech by a touchdown apiece. The Pirates have since gone in a different direction after controversially deciding to fire successful head coach Ruffin McNeill last season.

First-year head coach Scottie Montgomery led East Carolina to a 33-30 win over North Carolina State in his second game but fell short of a second straight upset last Saturday against South Carolina.

Virginia Tech’s secondary will be challenged by Pirates quarterback Phillip Nelson, who has over 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns this season. Receiver Zay Jones has been Nelson’s favorite target with 39 catches for 443 yards.
