New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman will return to a former position on Sunday, as he has been named the backup QB for their game against the Buffalo Bills.

For the New England Patriots, they’ve had an interesting year at quarterback. Tom Brady is still out until Week 5, and minor injuries have appeared with the backups. But also, they have an idea of what their revolving quarterback door will look like as they host the Buffalo Bills.

On Sunday morning, the team announced that Jacoby Brissett will start the game, but his backup will come in the form of Julian Edelman.

Things have been rocky at the quarterback position, with Brady wrapping up a four-game suspension, and minor injuries to Jimmy Garappolo and Brissett. However Brissett will be back on board as the team’s starter when the game kicks off at noon.

It will be interesting to see how Edelman will do as he will likely see at least a few snaps today. But it’s a familiar spot for for Edelman, as he was a capable QB in college, before converting to a wide receiver for the Patriots. NESN, a big media outlet in the northeast, posted a YouTube video highlighting his time at Kent State.

In three years as Kent State QB, Edelman completed just over half (54.5 percent) of his passes and threw for 4,997 yards. He posted 30 touchdown passes to his credit, and was also tagged for 31 picks during his span from 2006-2008. He averaged 7.1 yards per pass, so he is definitely capable of getting some production, should he have to get into the game.

It’s another big play by Bill Belichick, who has been keeping his weekly plays close to the vest almost right up until game time. CBS will hold the national broadcast beginning at 12:00 p.m. CST, from Gillette Stadium. Funny enough, the Patriots are only 3.5-point favorites heading into this big AFC East rivalry game. Will we see Edelman get any significant action, and how will he perform, if he DOES play?
