Manchester City fall in our rankings after defeat at Tottenham, but how do the other 19 teams stack up?

20. Sunderland (LW: 18)

Patrick van Aanholt made the most of his appearance off the bench, converting a cheeky hopper for the equalizer. Duncan Watmore’s lefty assist on the goal was nothing short of luscious.

19. West Ham (LW: 19)

Dimitri Payet goes one way, and the defense goes the other. His leaning equalizer slipped past several people undone by the laws of momentum. Payet, it seems, does not adhere to these laws.

18. Stoke (LW: 20)

Someone forgot to tell Joe Allen that Stoke had no business playing up to Manchester United at Old Trafford. Allen stole a goal from a mess in front of David de Gea, and otherwise the Potters were impressive defensively.

17. Middlesbrough (LW: 17)

Cristhian Stuani’s header gave Middlesbrough the opening goal they so often lack. Naturally, Boro gave up that lead less than seven minutes later. Of note, Alvaro Negredo is having problems maintaining form and was ineffective as a substitute.

16. Bournemouth (LW: 16)

Callum Wilson opened the scoring with one of the more precise headers he will ever score, placing the ball through Heurelho Gomes’ legs. Despite the chances they had in the second half, the Cherries will be pleased to take a point on the road.

15. Southampton (LW: 12)

Against the champions away, the Saints played with vigor defensively, locking down Jamie Vardy and preventing anything substantial from developing. Charlie Austin had several decent chances on goal. Expect him to continue generating opportunities.

14. Hull (LW: 11)

The Tigers played an exceptional first half against stiff competition, holding Chelsea scoreless. The problem was that Hull themselves could not capitalize on anything either. By the time Chelsea scored one, it may as well have been a hundred.

13. Swansea (LW: 14)

Leroy Fer’s goal was emblematic of the kind of goal an underdog must score to beat a favorite. Even with that early advantage, Swansea could not hold their opponents. Angel Rangel’s foul on Firmino in the final ten minutes was simply inexcusable.

12. West Brom (LW: 13)

After breaking past the defense, Nacer Chadli struck a low ball to the far post for the only goal of Albion’s day. The Baggies had numerous chances on the counter without a goal. Their +1 goal difference on the season is cause for some concern.

11. Burnley (LW: 15)

If not for a rousing final movement, Burnley would have taken a point off Arsenal. Burnley’s back four was consistently better on the day, but Sam Vokes and Michael Keane missed good opportunities.

10. Watford (LW: 10)

Isaac Success leaves little to the imagination when his name appears on an active roster list, and he did not disappoint. After coming on as a substitute, Success placed a stunning effort into the far post to draw the hosts level.

9. Leicester (LW: 9)

Leicester’s title hangover is becoming nearly as legendary as the title itself. The Lions looked completely listless. Riyad Mahrez drew a yellow card, which was nice simply because it proved Leicester actually showed up to play.

8. Everton (LW: 6)

Though Romelu Lukaku’s free-kick absolutely froze Steve Mandanda, Everton gave up too many counterattacking movements. Given they held nearly 60 percent possession, the Toffees should have done more in attack themselves.

7. Crystal Palace (LW: 8)

Christian Benteke’s header to equalize was nothing short of mesmerizing. Palace are surely pleased with having played the second half with such urgency. It could easily have swung completely their way.

6. Manchester United (LW: 5)

Anthony Martial’s splendid strike notwithstanding, United exhibited severe problems finishing, despite the 24-7 advantage in shots. United supporters have to feel good that Martial’s goal came from a Wayne Rooney pass.

5. Chelsea (LW: 7)

Following a sloppy first half, Chelsea collected two goals in six minutes to take firm command. Diego Costa’s form is positively fourth dimensional right now, as he added to his goal total and threw on an assist as well.

4. Liverpool (LW: 3)

In coming back from down a goal on the road, Liverpool put in a convincing performance. James Milner’s penalty to take the lead begat an occasionally shaky period of defense, from which the Reds emerged victorious.

3. Arsenal (LW: 2)

The Gunners snagged victory from the jaws of defeat in celebration of Arsene Wenger’s 20th anniversary at the club. Laurent Koscielny’s goal was the result of an unintentional handball and was far more lucky than good. Sometimes that’s all a team needs.

2. Manchester City (LW: 1)

Despite a strong second half which yielded several chances, City could not steal points at White Hart Lane. An Aleksandar Kolarov own goal was simply a poor clearance. Sergio Aguero exhibited problems getting clear shots for the first time this season.

1. Tottenham (LW: 4)

Tottenham played exactly the way a team must play in order to beat Pep Guardiola’s Man City. Man of the Match Dele Alli slotted a ball perfectly past Claudio Bravo. Heung-Min Son has been phenomenal and will be important as Harry Kane’s replacement.
