Indiana football to wear ‘Candy Stripe’ uniforms for homecoming weekend (Photo)
Indiana will wear these “Candy Stripe” uniforms for homecoming weekend
One of the Indiana University basketball program’s most famous traditions, besides not having won a national championship in nearly 30 years and claiming to be relevant, is the distinctive striped pants worn by its teams during warm-ups. The pants serve as a reminder of the program’s glory days, when the men’s team would occasionally meet expectations instead of floundering pathetically against lesser competition every March.
Apparently, fans of the football team wanted a similar reminder during the time when they are obligated to care about football. For the team’s homecoming matchup against Nebraska on October 15th, Adidas obliged them:
Uhhhhh… Well then. This uniform unveiling raises several questions: has science gone too far? Is the alternate jersey revolution a result of a generation raised on instant gratification and their alleged inability to stick to any one concept or task for more than a few minutes at a time? Did adidas think this was actually a good idea, or did they pitch it as a joke and then sheepishly follow through, laughing behind their hands when they were actually commissioned to make the uniforms?
Jokes aside, these abominations do have some redeeming factors. Indiana’s script logo always looks clean and elegant, even when stuck randomly on the side of football pants, where nothing like that should ever be. The numbers on both the jerseys and the helmets have a cool bit of flair as well, according to the school’s press release regarding the alternate threads:
“The historic inspiration continues with white classic tackle twill numbers, highlighted with hints of the Indiana state flag. Each number has its own unique piece of the flag, depicting different angles of the 19 stars and torch that represent liberty and enlightenment of the 19th state to join the United States. Additionally, six stars releasing rays of light that embody the state’s far-reaching influence are depicted within the design.”

Finally, the gloves are snazzy and the white cleats/red laces combo is about as fresh as it gets. Overall, given the concept adidas was working from for this ensemble, things could have been a lot worse. Can you imagine how bad actual candy-striped football pants would look? Yuck.
