Now that the race for the ACC title has some new players in the lead positions, here are our Power Rankings after Week Six of the 2016 season.
As we reach the halfway point of the 2016 college football season, the ACC is finding themselves to be one of the weirdest conferences in the FBS this year. Other than Clemson and Louisville that have consistently been at the top of the 14 team league, there has been so much fluctuation with the other teams it may be hard to keep track.
This weekend, two of better teams in the conference move back up in the power rankings after big league wins while the bottom five teams continue to stay that way for the time being.
Here’s a look at our power rankings following week six’s action.
You almost start to wonder if the ACC would have been better off taking someone like UConn or Cincinnati or even USF when it came time to raid the Big East. The Orange this year are proving themselves to be really comfortable with this last place spot in the standings.
The excuse is going to be that Dino Babers is trying to get things settled in his first year as head coach. That’s all fine and dandy, but you don’t go out and lay an egg against a team like Wake (more on them later) and think everything is fine. It’s a wonder they have two wins already.
After a 3-0 start to the season, we are starting to see the true colors of head coach Paul Johnson’s team. It’s not so much that they lost three in a row – it’s that they looked bad doing it in all the games (don’t let the score fool you this week, Pitt let them get back in it).
With games still on the schedule that include North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Georgia (all on the road), Johnson’s seat has just gotten pretty warn in what is one upset loss away from being another season at home watching bowl games being played.
On the bright side for the Cavaliers, they have moved up from being in the cellar of these rankings at the start of the year (that’s what happens when you lose to FBS teams). However, they must face my self imposed penalty that comes with a bye week – you get knocked down at least one spot.
With games left that include North Carolina, Miami, Virginia Tech and Louisville, the Wahoos can pretty much kiss bowl season goodbye – which might not be the worst thing for Bronco Mendenhall’s team. Now, they can figure out what they have for 2017 and start preps for that season early.
Those in the commonwealth are going to be up in arms (not just because David Ortiz is about to be sent packing for good) about dropping a spot in the rankings when you lose to the third ranked team in the country.
True, there should be a slight asterisk by this since they were playing Clemson – but even with that, the Eagles didn’t even looks close to being in it. Patrick Towles has again proved to be the most overrated transfer this season, throwing for just 91 yards in the game. Maybe they should be sent back to the Big East.
It was just three seasons ago that the Blue Devils were in the ACC Championship Game, going head to head with the eventual champions from Florida State. Fast forward three seasons and the team is cheering a 13 point output over an Army team that hasn’t had a winning season since 1996.
It was a rainy game thanks to Hurricane Matthew, but the Blue Devils looked lethargic and unable to handle the run game at times. In a division with teams like Miami, UNC and Virginia Tech, the inability to stop the run means no bowl game for you.
