Ondrej Pavelec and P.A. Parenteau head a surprising group of players put on NHL waivers.

As NHL teams are putting together their final rosters for the start of the 2016-17 season, there have been some notable roster cuts. Even if the cuts aren’t surprising, they’re significant because they show what direction the respective team is going in. Though teams don’t have to finalize their roster until 5:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday Oct. 11, there have been quite a few notable cuts on Monday.

The biggest name on waivers is Winnipeg Jets goaltender Ondrej Pavelec. Winnipeg has been very loyal to Pavelec, perhaps to a fault. Last season, Pavelec became expendable thanks to the emergence of Michael Hutchinson and Connor Hellebuyck. The Jets are prepared to have Hutchinson and Hellebuyck as their goaltending tandem. Winnipeg is getting younger, and that’s a very good thing.

Perhaps the most surprising name? P.A. Parenteau of the New York Islanders. After the loss of Kyle Okposo, Parenteau was signed thanks to his chemistry with captain John Tavares. Even though the Islanders have a number of impressive young forwards, Parenteau is a surprising name on waivers. He impressed last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs and has a $1.25 million cap hit, so expect some team to take a flyer on him.

The Los Angeles Kings will be placing both defenseman Rob Scuderi and forward Michael Latta on waivers. Scuderi was acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks last season and won a Stanley Cup with the Kings in 2013-14. His play in recent seasons has declined as age has caught up to him.

Keep an eye on Tampa Bay Lightning forward Erik Condra, who is on waivers according to Chris Johnston. He’s a fourth line wing, but he is a very solid defensive forward. Condra is still one of the better penalty killers in the NHL, so don’t be surprised if a team claims him. Teemu Pulkkinen of the Detroit Red Wings is another interesting name on waivers. While he hasn’t stuck in the NHL yet, his AHL resume is quite impressive.

Gregory Campbell of the Columbus Blue Jackets and Brandon Bollig of the Calgary Flames are both on waivers, according to Bob McKenzie. Goaltender Mike Condon of the Montreal Canadiens is on waivers. Al Montoya rendered Condon surplus.

Here’s a full list of the players on waivers.

Teams must be cap compliant by Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. ET.
