Virginia: Michael Vick – Virginia Tech Hokies
Virginia has produced some of the best college football players we’ve ever seen, including Bruce Smith, Lawrence Taylor, Ronde Barber, Tiki Barber and DeAngelo Hall. The state also produced a pretty good college quarterback in Fran Tarkenton, who went on to a very successful pro career. However, no Virginia-born signal caller compares to Michael Vick.
Vick was born in Newport News, Virginia and achieved stardom at Warwick High School. His college choice came down to Syracuse and Virginia Tech, and he eventually chose to play for the Hokies. Coach Frank Beamer redshirted the electric athlete during his first year to give him proper time to develop. It would prove to be a wise decision.
As a redshirt freshman, Vick led the Hokies to an 11-0 record and the BCS National Championship game against Florida State. During that season, Michael led the NCAA in passing efficiency with a mark of 180.4, the third-highest of all time. He was also the Big East Rookie of the Year, the Offensive Player of the Year and the first-ever recipient of the Archie Griffin Award. Additionally, Vick finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting.
He went on to have a successful sophomore season, finishing sixth in the Heisman voting. After that season, Vick elected to go into the NFL and became the first African-American quarterback to be selected first overall in the draft. He was having an excellent NFL career for the Atlanta Falcons and was selected to three Pro Bowls before getting into legal troubles for his involvement in dogfighting. Vick received his fourth Pro Bowl selection in 2010 as the starter for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Michael Vick will always be a divisive figure, but there’s no denying his greatness on the field. He is comfortably the best college quarterback born in Virginia.
