5 reasons Jalen Hurts can win the Heisman Trophy
3. Consistency is key
Head coach Nick Saban has had the luxury of having adequate quarterbacks such as Greg McElroy, AJ McCarron and Jake Coker at his disposal, but this year warranted some uncertainty.
A fresh face and an unfamiliar style took over, and the football world was introduced to Jalen Hurts. Since taking over as the starting quarterback, all doubts are gone. The super freshman may not be jumping over defenders like Lamar Jackson or making defenders look silly like J.T. Barrett, but he’s exhibited a weekly highlight reel of his own. In the season opener, he opened the season with four total touchdowns and the rest was history.
Since the opening game, he has topped 250 yards passing three times and he ran for more than 125 yards on two occasions. To also help his case, he has a total of eight rushing touchdowns. Hurts also accomplished the feat of throwing completing 60 percent or more of his passes in the past six games.
In the regular season, Hurts has never had a game multiple interceptions, which is rare for a freshman quarterback. If Hurts isn’t throwing precise passes to his weapons, he’s running past defenders. Hurts’ dual-threat abilities are giving defenses headaches.
As the freshman plays more games, his comfort level heightens. Just looking at stats, it’s a testament to his consistency, which is startling for opposing teams.
