The Virginia Tech Hokies cruised past the Miami Hurricanes, defeating them 37-16. Here is the recap, highlights and key performers.

The Miami Hurricanes lost their third straight game after conning people into thinking they were back at the mountaintop of college football. In an ACC clash against a familiar foe, the Virginia Tech Hokies bounced back from an upsetting loss last week to Syracuse

The first half started off competitive as the teams went into halftime with the Hokies only up 16-9. In the third quarter, things got out of hand as Virginia Tech added an additional 14 points, including a 13-yard pass to Steven Peoples from fellow backfield mate Sam Rodgers.

With the trickery on full display, it was an illustration of how Thursday night went for the Hurricanes.

The icing on the cake would come courtesy of Jerod Evans, who scampered 34 yards for a game-clinching touchdown. For most of the night the Hurricanes had protection issues, allowing eight sacks. After a hot start, they will need to salvage their season after yet another embarrassing conference loss.

Highlights:

Three Stars

1) Sam Rogers: The multi-talented fullback did everything against the Hurricanes. The senior had two receptions for 72 yards, and he tossed a 13-yard touchdown. Rogers is rarely featured in the offense, but tonight, he showed the world his arsenal of skills. Who said the impact of the fullback was no more? Rogers proves that notion doesn’t apply to him.

2) Jerod Evans: Jerod Evans is slowly morphing into one of the top quarterbacks in the ACC. Tonight, he proved that belonged among the elite signal-callers not only in the ACC but in the whole country as well. Against Miami, he combined for 357 yards.

More on FanSided:

In addition to his massive yardage total, he scored three touchdowns, including a game-clinching touchdown run that put it out of reach.

3) The offensive line: The big guys up front rarely get acknowledgment, so it’s only right to praise them after tonight’s victory. Against one of the best rush defenses in the conference, the offensive line plummeted the Hurricane defense by opening up gaping holes for the running game. As a unit, the Hokies ran for 251 yards while averaging over five yards per carry.
