When did the Chicago Cubs last play in the World Series?

The Chicago Cubs are trying to end the longest championship drought in North American sports by winning the World Series for the first time since 1908. Not only has it been a long time since the Cubs won the World Series, it has been an incredibly long time since they even played in a World Series.

The Cubs have not played in the World Series since 1945, 71 years ago. To put it in perspective, that’s almost as long as the Boston Red Sox’s World Series drought, which lasted 87 years.

The National League Championship series hadn’t even been invented the last time the Cubs reached the World Series, coming into fruition in 1969. Since then, the Cubs have gone to the NLCS just five times (1984, 1989, 2003, 2015, 2016).

If the League Championship Series had never come to fruition, the Cubs would’ve reached the World Series under the old rules by having the best record in the National League in 1984 and 1989.

But alas, they lost those years in the NLCS. The NLCS didn’t even become a seven game series until 1985.

Times have changed since the last time the World Series hosted the Cubs, and all of Chicago is hoping the drought can come to an end.
