5 reasons Rams should start Jared Goff over Case Keenum
1. Todd Gurley needs help
The team as a whole could benefit from Jared Goff in the huddle, but Todd Gurley may feel his presence more than most. The offensive weapons in Los Angeles need to collaborate for the offense to succeed.
Kenny Britt and Tavon Austin have the ability to stretch the field vertically but Case Keenum doesn’t quite have the arm to push the ball downfield consistently. The inability to threaten defenses with deeper passes, has spilled over into the run game. Defenses have taken note and have focused on short passes and the run game.
The lack of downfield success has destroyed Todd Gurley’s run game. He has consistently faced stacked boxes and defenses that are more than prepared to shut him down. And by shutting down the best offensive player on the team, the Rams’ offense has suffered. They average 79.9 rushing yards per game (29th overall) and 227.7 passing yards per game (25th overall).
Starting Jared Goff over Case Keenum could resolve that. Goff has the arm to threaten defenses downfield and will force safeties to back off which would create more space for Gurley. The Rams offense is centered around Todd Gurley being successful and if Goff can increase the chances of that happening, then he will increase the Rams’ chances of winning.
