In some surprising and strange news, the Green Bay Packers have waived running back Knile Davis.

In what some may consider some surprising news, the Green Bay Packers have cut running back Knile Davis just a mere 13 days after acquiring him.

During his two games in Green Bay, Davis received a whole five carries for five yards. He also caught two balls for four yards. While nine yards on seven touches is certainly not good, the release still comes as a surprise given that the Pack gave up a draft pick –albeit a late one– for him. It is possible that the pick exchange will be revoked after the release, though.

Coach Mike McCarthy seemed happy with the team’s new acquisition when asked about him heading into his second game with the team

"“Well, Knile Davis, he’s part of the game plan, I think the extra time he spent with Ben Sirmans over the weekend, getting ready. So, yeah, I like what he brings to the table. He’s a natural football player, someone that’s played a lot of football, was successful obviously in college and he’s been in the league. I think this is just more of a language and communication gap that you have to fill. He’s very bright. He’s making progress.”"

Maybe something happened, or maybe Packers brass just changed their mind on the one-time handcuff to Jamaal Charles. Considering the team’s depth at the position, Davis probably thought his position was all but secured.

Now, recently promoted from the practice squad, Don Jackson seems to be the only healthy, conventional running back on the current Packers roster. He has run six times for ten yards in the past two games. Not exactly inspiring. Normal starter Eddie Lacy is on IR with an ankle injury.

The team will most likely get the versatile Ty Montgomery back next week, and possibly Randall Cobb as well. Both players are capable of playing in the backfield, but neither is a proven between the tackles runner. Perhaps James Starks is on track for a quicker recovery than expected after having surgery on his meniscus just two weeks ago.

Or, perhaps the Packers will go with a strategy normally delegated to Madden franchises where they pass nearly every play. If any team can do it, Green Bay would be the team with Aaron Rodgers behind center.

For now, Knile Davis will hit waivers before going to free agency if he is unclaimed. Perhaps a team will take a flyer on the talented runner, as he does have 14 touchdowns to his name. At the same time, teams will most likely be weary after seeing the playoff hopeful Packers got him only to replace him with a combination of receivers and a practice squad running back.
