Joining the Big Ten two seasons ago, the Maryland Terrapins have proven to be one of the best three or four teams in the conference. They finished in second place in their first season and then third place last year. Could they bounce back in 2016-17 despite losing a ton of talent?
Maryland has lost some supreme talent from a 2015-16 team that was considered an early Final Four favorite. Rasheed Sulaimon transferred in from Duke, Diamond Stone was a freshman sensation and Robert Carter also transferred in. The team fared well, but ultimately fell short of its goal, losing in the Sweet 16 to Kansas.
Melo Trimble returns as the star of the team and a guy who I believe could realistically win the Big Ten Player of the Year award. Many thought the point guard would go pro after last year, but he has stuck around and will continue to lead the team in scoring.
American, on the other hand, began the 2015-16 season just 2-15 and looked to be on pace for a historically poor season, but the Eagles turned things around in conference play. They pulled it together and went 10-4 in their final 14 games to finish the season 12-19.
Obviously that wasn’t the ideal season, but they conjured up some momentum heading into the 2016-17 campaign. Losing top scorer Jesse Reed and impressive role player Paris Maragkos will hurt, but the Eagles return Delante Jones and James Washington. Those two guys will be key pieces to the Patriot League puzzle this season.
