The Purdue Boilermakers enter the 2016-17 season as one of the major favorites to win the Big Ten this year. Although they have lost some talent from a team that went 26-9 and finished as the Big Ten Tournament runner-up, the Boilermakers bring back a solid squad.
Losing A.J. Hammons will definitely hurt the Boilermakers in the post, but they also bring back Isaac Haas and Caleb Swanigan. Vince Edwards is also a solid post player, but Swanigan will likely have the breakout season of the bunch heading into his sophomore year.
Purdue’s biggest weakness might be the fact that it doesn’t have a true point guard running the show, but Michigan-transfer Spike Albrecht could provide a boost. He averaged 7.5 points and 3.9 assists just two years ago with the Wolverines and even played on a Final Four team.
McNeese isn’t the most well-known basketball program around, but the Cowboys have their three top scorers returning from a season ago. That might not mean much to Purdue seeing as McNeese finished just 9-20 during the regular season last year and didn’t put up much of a fight against power conference foes.
Jamaya Burr, the team’s top overall player, averaged over 36 minutes per game last season and he will be the team’s go-to scorer and workhorse. He averaged 15.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. The Cowboys also have Jarren Greenwood and James Harvey returning.
